Job Summary
The Experimental A&P Mechanic – Lead is responsible for overseeing and performing advanced maintenance, repair, and modification of experimental aircraft and related systems. This role involves leading a team of mechanics, ensuring compliance with FAA regulations, and maintaining high standards of safety and quality. The Lead Mechanic will troubleshoot complex mechanical and avionics issues, conduct inspections, and implement innovative solutions for experimental aircraft designs. Key responsibilities include coordinating workflows, mentoring team members, maintaining detailed documentation, and collaborating with engineers and project managers to support prototype development and testing. The ideal candidate holds an FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license, has extensive experience with experimental aircraft, and demonstrates strong leadership and problem-solving skills.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and supervise a team of A&P mechanics in maintenance, repair, and modification tasks.
- Perform complex diagnostics, repairs, and inspections on experimental aircraft systems.
- Ensure compliance with FAA regulations, safety standards, and company policies.
- Collaborate with engineering teams to support prototype development and testing.
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and modifications.
- Mentor and train junior mechanics to enhance team performance.
- Manage inventory of tools, parts, and materials for efficient operations.
Qualifications:
- FAA Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) License required.
- 5+ years of experience as an A&P mechanic, with a focus on experimental aircraft.
- Proven leadership experience in a maintenance or aviation environment.
- Strong knowledge of aircraft systems, including engines, avionics, and airframes.
- Familiarity with FAA regulations and experimental aircraft certification processes.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and team management skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Proficiency with aviation maintenance tools and software.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with composite materials and advanced aircraft technologies.
- Prior work on prototype or experimental aircraft projects.
- Inspection Authorization (IA) certification is a plus.
Work Environment:
- Work primarily in hangars, workshops, or flight test facilities.
- May involve exposure to loud noises, chemicals, and varying weather conditions.
- Requires physical stamina for lifting, bending, and working in confined spaces.
