Yvette Tucker

I did not like her off the top, I thought she was too young (my age) to tell me anything, I didn’t trust women (I had mother issues) and no one could tell me anything (I started caring for myself and my alcoholic and drug addicted mother at an early age, “I knew more than she could teach me”. She had the power, I learned that the hard way. I did not know how to begin stopping, and I needed help and I needed it fast.

1. By the time I made it to the drug court program I was grey skinned, had lost my children to the foster care system, cut all my hair off (it was too expensive to manage) and I was living on the street, married to a Hispanic man who cared for me and my children during my worst days. I had missed all the court appointments to regain custody of my children and the only way to get them back was to show up with support. But again, how would I do that, I was on the using and taking hostages (manipulating men) for six years. Marlise knew I needed help and the other way to help me understand I needed the help; I needed a detox program. Which was linked to the drug court program, linked to Twin Towers. I went for a 30-period due to my continuous using, attempting relationships in the drug court program and openly (acting as if I was still on the street). I entered the Inglewood Court house to (ride the jail bus to the Twin Towers on January 8, 2000). 3. I woke up the next morning to an AA group where a woman was holing up the AA Book and talking about how a Biker Like herself turn to AA for help. 4. I loved Alcohol, and like drugs. Alcohol was the go-to drug for me at an early age (in Alabama where everyone touched everyone sexually-cousins, sisters, fathers/stepfathers etc..) and the incest was not to be mentioned every. It was being mentioned now, as I sit in jail cell wondering how I got here? a. Marlise told me her story, discussed with me how she can see I have walls of protection and trust, and guided me to a starting point in recovery. She told me, that I did not have to take another drink or drug if I follow the suggestions given. b. I spent 18 months in the outpatient with Marlise as my Counselor. I graduated into Society, learn to live one day at a time with a Sponsor in Alcoholic Anonymous, and grown to not only respect Marlise for helping me detox in the Twin Towers, but Love her for it. 5. It was not an easy journey to take, and Marlise was not easy to get along with. She was not easy on me and gave me guidance Firmly in the beginning and once she saw the Program showing up in my life, she provided other avenues, to allow me to continue to stay clean and sober. I have not had to have a drink or a drug since January 8, 2000, I utterly and complete owe my recovery to Marlise and the Inglewood Drug Court Program through AADAP (Asian American Drug and Alcohol Program). 6. I gained my children back into my life because of the program, I was able to go to school and enter into a county contract with the same agency that removed my children, received a Master’s in Social Work in May 2014. Now studying to set for the LCSW test in 2021. I am grateful and honored to support, endorse and participate in any way I can for Marlise, she calls, and I am coming, she is the reason I am alive today
