Sunrise Gymnastics has been a family-owned and operated business for over 43 years. Sunrise was started by Yusaku and Sherry Hijioka in 1979. Yusaku has a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from Nippon College in Tokyo, Japan, and a master’s degree in physical education from Kent State University. He competed on the men’s gymnastics team for 4 years at Nippon College. Yusaku and Sherry met at Kent State while she was pursuing her bachelor’s degree in physical education. She was a four-year member of the women’s gymnastics team at Kent State and captain her senior year.

Sherry went on to Arizona State where she received her master’s degree in physical education. Yusaku and Sherry started Sunrise in 1979 in a rented space on Centennial Road. They rented the space for three years before purchasing their current property on Holland Sylvania Rd. They have expanded the facility twice to its current size of 29,400 square feet. Sunrise is proud to offer the greater Toledo area one of the largest and best-equipped facilities in the United States. They have introduced the sport of gymnastics to thousands of children for more than 40 years. It is their continued goal to develop strong, healthy bodies as well as confident, self-disciplined individuals through gymnastics and other sports and fitness-related activities.
