I grew up in Eastern North Carolina and spent a lot of time exploring the waterways around Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout, North Carolina, with my mother. My father introduced us to more distant locales, enabling me to experience much of the East Coast, from Canada to Florida, by adulthood. At eighteen, my first venture abroad was to Costa Rica, just before starting art school. My father and I connected with a Costa Rican student from my future university, leading to an incredible cultural exchange with a welcoming family. Their hospitality was reciprocated the following year. The rich cultural and natural beauty of Costa Rica—embodying the “Pura Vida” lifestyle—have drawn me back repeatedly.
