How to Help a Community:

According to ASPCA, an estimated 530,000 stray cats are euthanized in animal shelters every year. That is why it’s so important to spay and neuter these cats instead of having them killed. If you have a cat colony in your neighborhood, there are many ways you can help the animals without resorting to lethal means.

Here are some tips on how to help a community:

TNR:

If there is a cat colony near you, chances are there is an unaltered male who is causing all kinds of problems with the females’ reproductive cycles – that’s where TNR comes into play. Opposed to the “trap and kill” method, TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) traps the cats and gets them spayed/neutered. Once they’re sterilized, they will no longer be able to reproduce.

Keep Your Distance:

If you do come across a cat colony in your area, remember this: these cats are usually very skittish around humans. Please keep your distance and let them roam freely. Don’t hurt them because it’s already hard enough for them.

Build A Shelter:

If the stray cats don’t have a shelter to sleep in at night, they will most likely freeze to death if they’re laying on the cold ground all day long – so consider building a shelter for them. They might not take too kindly to your gift at first, but they’ll appreciate it after a few days of being wet and shivering.

Fix the Stray Cats You See:

It may seem like common sense, but if you see a stray cat, please get it spayed/neutered. You can also have it vaccinated since many of them may have diseases that can be prevented from vaccinations.

Feeding:

Interestingly enough, community cats do not need your help with food – they are usually able to hunt for their own food unless there aren’t enough rodents or insects around your area so feeding them on a regular basis won’t hurt. Just remember that you should never feed them table scraps because of bacteria and other things associated with diets.

Hand them Over to Us:

If you’re not sure what to do with a stray cat and you don’t want to deal with it, please hand it over to us. We’ll take care of it until it’s ready for adoption. This is the best you can do to help the community.

The Cassie Lee Cat Rescue is dedicated to saving stray, abandoned, abused or injured cats and placing them into loving homes. We have the perfect environment and staff to take care of these cats until they are ready for adoption.

Thank you for helping us serve the community.

Educate Your Neighbors:

If you have a cat colony in your neighborhood, chances are there are some people who might not know about TNR or don’t want cats in their property – so educate these people on how to properly take care of the animals.
