The Bazaars of Iran

Bazaars originated in ancient Persia and were originally the public market in a Persian town. From Persia, the term and practice spread to Arabia (the Arabic work is souk), Turkey and North Africa. Bazaars then and now are marketplaces with small stalls or shops filled with everything from fabric to spices. Centuries later, they continue to be a central feature of life in many countries.

One of the biggest and most beautiful Bazaars of Iran can be found in Shiraz. Bazaar Vakhil is in the historical region of Shiraz and houses stalls, stores, restaurants and even a Mosque. The Bazaar was built during the Zand era in the 1700s and has withstood multiple earthquakes over the years.

The Bazaar has wide corridors and high ceilings with openings that allow light and air circulation. The Bazaar has over five entrances with stalls that run parallel and perpendicular. It has beautiful courtyards, bath-houses, and old shops which are deemed among the best places in Shiraz to buy all kinds of Persian rugs, spices, copper, crafts and antiques.

The history and features of this Bazaar makes it a must – see when in Iran. It’s functionality and beauty makes it a place to stop and stock up on all the things needed for your home away from home.
